Grandmaster Joe
A lifelong martial artist with over 50 years of continuous practice, teaching, and refinement across six distinct disciplines.
Grandmaster Joe is the headmaster and sole instructor at Sunrise Dojo. He did not create the styles he teaches — he is their steward. Each system he has studied under legitimate lineage holders, earning high-ranking black belt credentials in six arts. That depth of study shapes how he transmits the material: not as a single-system dogmatist, but as a practitioner who can draw cross-disciplinary connections most instructors simply do not possess.
His mission at the dojo is to preserve and transmit authentic, functional martial arts to committed adult students — without shortcuts, without contracts, without the commercial compromises that dilute instruction elsewhere.
Every technique Grandmaster Joe teaches comes with an explanation of its biomechanical logic and its practical context. If a movement only works when the practitioner is young, strong, or bigger than the opponent, he considers it incomplete. The standard is techniques that scale with age and understanding — built on structure, not strength.
Systems of Study
Grandmaster Joe holds high-ranking black belt credentials in the following arts, each studied under legitimate lineage instruction.
The primary system taught at the dojo
Hard-soft striking & structural integrity
Striking-integrated throws & joint control
Close-quarters combat system
Traditional empty-hand art
Redirection & movement principles
Bo staff, nunchaku, sai, and additional weapons systems
The Teaching Philosophy
"We do not force the person to fit the art; we adapt the art to the person. We teach principles that allow one movement to flow naturally into the next. If a technique cannot change with the practitioner or the situation, it is incomplete. Ishaodo is an art built to move, adapt, and last a lifetime."
— Ishaodo Martial Arts
Instruction at Sunrise Dojo is personal. Grandmaster Joe evaluates each prospective student individually to determine if the fit is right.
